It's funny how things sometimes lead to places you never expected ...
Last spring, on a whim, I bought some gourd seeds. I planted them and as the gourds grew in my garden, I started looking at lots and lots of gourd art. I spent quite a lot of time researching & investigating all sorts of things I could do with my gourd harvest and I started planning ... and dreaming.
After harvesting a few of the smaller gourds I grew, I bought an inexpensive wood burner, a Dremel, and some inks, dyes and paints. I started working with some of the gourds and learned from my own experiments and a lot of trial and error. At the same time, I kept looking around for more and more information about what gourd artists use and how they create their gourd art. Soon I came across some artists using alcohol inks on gourds and decided to try them out on a gourd or two.
The alcohol inks were lots of fun! But, alcohol inks aren't just for gourds -- they can be used on any non-porous surface ... so, I decided to try the inks out on some other things too -- including some super glossy, non-porous paper I already had here. Never in a million years did I think that buying some gourd seeds would lead me to creating alcohol ink art prints, but it did!
Here's my first stab at creating a custom print with alcohol inks... (very) abstract poppies.
What do you think?
