I was given the gift of an amaryllis bulb kit when I was in Pennsylvania over Thanksgiving. We have a bunch of amaryllis, but I don't think I've ever had an amaryllis kit before ... I was pleasantly surprised to see everything needed to grow an amaryllis in the box. Yep, inside the box was an amaryllis bulb, a bag of potting soil, and a pot.
How convenient! Amaryllis bulbs and bulb kits make great gifts!
Anyway, by the time I got back to Virginia and opened up the box, I saw that the amaryllis bulb had already started growing and the flower stalk was about 6 inches long. The poor thing had grown inside the box and the flower stem was a big curvy mess.
I potted it up anyway (again, how convenient a little kit it was!) and placed it in a sunny window. Slowly but surely, it straightened itself out and the first flower started blooming yesterday.
It's a pretty pink and white variety called "Apple Blossom" and it was the inspiration (and excuse) for doing a little artwork today.
My Amarillis print (above) would also make a great gift (hint hint!) and is available for purchase at CarylAlys.com
