'Little Gem' Romaine Lettuce & Red Beets
We've been working really hard in the veggie garden over the last month or so and things are starting to look pretty good! So far this year, we've harvested 58 lbs of asparagus, 45 lbs of strawberries, 3 lbs of sugar peas, 3 lbs of swiss chard, and lettuce, radishes, and broccoli.
The asparagus and strawberries are still coming along-- not as fast as before, but enough for dinner every few days. I imagine we'll get another 10 lbs of asparagus and at least 10 or 15 more lbs of strawberries. Since our freezer is full right now (anyone have a large freezer for sale?), we'll be eating it. Seriously, I think I'm about to turn green from the amount of asparagus I've eaten this last month!
Anyway, here are a few interesting things growing in our veggie garden right now...
Kohlrabi
We have 8 kohlrabi plants... first time I've ever grown them (of course I opted for the purple variety!)
Savoy Cabbage
Another new variety for me this year ... I've read that savoy cabbage is the "darling" of many chefs.
Looking forward to seeing what it's like!
Red, Yellow and Vidalia Onions
For the first time ever, I've been able to keep the weeds around the onions under control!
Carrots
I've been planting carrots in succession to try to extend the season for them.
Right now I have 3 beds of carrots & I hope to make at least 2 or 3 more.
Peas
Our peas aren't doing that great this year. We'll get some, but not enough I think!
Potatoes
Our potatoes are doing really great this year ... probably because we planted them right next to a mulch pile and have been really good about hilling them and patrolling for Colorado Potato Beetles. (click here for info on how we planted them this year)
Red Romaine Lettuce
This is a new variety of lettuce for us ... we love romaine lettuce, so we're hoping it will be especially good!
Black Eyed Peas
We decided to only grow pole beans this year, but I didn't notice that these Black Eyed Peas are bush beans when I placed our order. So ... we've got some bush beans growing too (my back hurts already just thinking about picking them!)
Parsnips
Parsnips are grown much like carrots, except that you can leave them in the ground well into the winter. I've planted these in succession too and hope to have at least 4 or 5 beds of them soon.
Kale
I didn't plant Kale this spring -- these were planted last fall, came back and immediately went to seed. So, I decided to let them! I'll gather seeds from them soon and plant them in late summer for our fall garden.
Asparagus
We have 4 rows (each about 50 ft long) of asparagus. As you can see, we're still getting some pretty good sized asparagus, but we've decided not to pick all of the large ones this year and to let them go to ferns sooner rather than later with the hopes that we'll have even bigger and better plants next year.
